The Double T scoreboard made its debut during the 1978 Texas Tech University football season. The iconic structure, a much-beloved fixture at Jones AT&T Stadium for more than 40 years, is the featured design of the 2024 Texas Tech University Ornament. The $300,000 scoreboard ($1.5 million in today's dollars) was a gift from Lubbock National Bank to the university. A formal presentation to Texas Tech President Cecil Mackey took place Sept. 21, 1978, during head coach Rex Dockery's first season at the Red Raider helm.
Texas Tech's 40 foot-wide-by-50-foot-high scoreboard has been an electronic marvel from the moment it began its stint. Now towering 115 feet above the newly renovated south end zone, the Double T scoreboard is more than a source of statistical information during games. It proudly shines as a beacon on campus and is one of the most spectacular college scoreboards in the nation. It is a symbol of victory, cherished by all Red Raiders.
